Agentic checkout
Agentic checkout is when an AI agent completes a purchase on a shopper's behalf, rather than the shopper filling a cart and paying themselves. The agent places the order through a commerce protocol, either inside the assistant or by handing off to the store's own checkout.
How it works
A commerce protocol like ACP defines the checkout step, and a payments layer like AP2 proves the shopper authorized it. In practice, for a standard store today, ChatGPT tends to hand the shopper to the store's own checkout in an in-app browser rather than complete the sale entirely in the chat.
A commerce example
A shopper tells an assistant to buy the daypack it just recommended. For that to go through, the agent needs a current price, confirmed availability, and readable shipping and return terms; a gap in any of them can stall the checkout.
What this means for your store
Agentic checkout rewards complete, accurate data at the moment of sale. Keep availability and price honest and publish shipping and returns as data, not only as page text.
