Google AI Mode and AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of Google search results. Google AI Mode is the fuller conversational search experience. Both run on Google's own search index and increasingly include shopping results.

How it works

Because these surfaces run on Google's index and ranking systems, classic Google indexing is the entry ticket. Gemini, the model behind them, is the one major engine that renders JavaScript, because it uses Googlebot's renderer, though relying on that is still riskier than serving your data in plain HTML.

A commerce example

Shopify's agentic storefronts feed products into Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, so an eligible Shopify catalog can appear there without extra work, again judged on the completeness of its data.

What this means for your store

Keep your pages indexable by Google, publish complete structured data, and keep your Google Merchant Center feed accurate, since it feeds these surfaces through the Universal Commerce Protocol.
